Newegg Introduces ChatGPT-Powered Feature to End Review Analysis Paralysis

Newegg, the popular online retailer, has introduced a new feature called “Review Bytes” that utilizes ChatGPT, an AI language model, to provide customers with concise summaries of customer reviews. Instead of relying solely on composite review scores, customers can now see key terms and phrases that other customers frequently mention. For example, when shopping for a graphics card, customers might come across “Review Bytes” that mention “no coil whine,” “decent temps,” and a “zero RPM fan mode.” In addition to these snippets, Newegg also provides longer AI-generated paragraph summaries that offer more detailed insights, including any problem areas experienced by other customers.

The feature is currently only available on the desktop version of Newegg’s website for products that have reached a minimum threshold of reviews. Andrew Choi, Newegg’s director of brand and website experience, acknowledges that the process of analyzing relevant information to make a purchase decision can be burdensome. By providing real-life customer feedback more efficiently, Newegg aims to alleviate some of the challenges faced by shoppers.

To ensure transparency, Newegg clearly labels the summary as “SummaryAI” and places the original reviews below in their usual location. This allows customers to easily distinguish between the AI-generated summary and the authentic customer reviews.

Newegg’s AI review summary feature is part of a growing trend among shopping websites that are leveraging artificial intelligence. Earlier this year, Mercari introduced a virtual AI shopping assistant, Wayfair developed a tool that uses AI to help customers redecorate their living rooms, and Bing introduced AI price match monitors.

The integration of artificial intelligence into the online shopping experience is aimed at enhancing convenience and providing customers with more relevant and personalized information.
