Bing’s Game-Changing Deep Search Employs GPT-4 for Enhanced and Comprehensive Search Results

Bing, Microsoft’s search engine, has recently introduced a new feature called Deep Search. This feature aims to provide users with more detailed and comprehensive answers to their search queries. Unlike regular search results, Deep Search uses OpenAI’s GPT-4 to enhance its web index and ranking system, allowing it to better understand the intent behind the query. By expanding the query into a more comprehensive description, Deep Search surfaces results that may not typically show up in regular search results.

For instance, if a user searches for “how do points systems work in Japan?” using Deep Search, the query may be expanded to include an explanation of various loyalty card programs in Japan, including their benefits, requirements, and limitations. It may also provide examples of popular loyalty cards from different categories, such as convenience stores, supermarkets, and restaurants. Additionally, Deep Search can compare the advantages and disadvantages of using loyalty cards versus other payment methods in Japan, highlighting current rewards and benefits, as well as the most popular services and participating merchants.

To ensure accuracy and relevance, GPT-4 helps Deep Search come up with different possible intents for ambiguous queries. These different intent choices are then presented to the user, allowing them to select the most appropriate one. Once the intent is determined, Deep Search gathers a wide collection of web pages and ranks them according to how well they match the comprehensive description. This ensures that users see tailored results that align with their specific query.

While Deep Search provides more comprehensive results, it does take longer to produce them. Regular search queries on Bing typically take one second to respond, whereas Deep Search takes around thirty seconds. Due to the longer wait time and the depth of the results, Deep Search is not meant for every single query. Instead, it is designed for users who want to deep dive into a particular topic, such as when researching for a paper or seeking in-depth knowledge on a subject.

It’s worth noting that Deep Search works in tandem with Bing’s regular search engine, rather than replacing it. This means that users can still rely on Bing for quick answers and use Deep Search when they require more comprehensive information. With the integration of OpenAI’s GPT-4, Bing aims to provide users with a more robust and satisfying search experience, catering to both those seeking quick answers and those looking for a thorough understanding of a topic.
