Transform Your Boring Photos with Photoshop’s Generative Fill AI Tool: A Step-by-Step Guide

AI Tool Stack: Adobe Photoshop’s Generative Fill Revolutionizes Image Creation

In the world of generative AI that produces images, there are two main approaches. Tools like Midjourney and Stable Diffusion create entire images based on AI prompts, while Adobe Photoshop takes a different approach by adding an image and fitting it into an existing scene.

In 2023, Adobe introduced a powerful feature called Generative Fill to Photoshop. Initially, users could generate unlimited images, but now Adobe has implemented “Generative Fill Credits.” Some credits are free with a Creative Cloud license, but excessive usage may result in charges.

As an expert in AI technology, I have been exploring Photoshop’s Generative Fill and have found it to be a fascinating tool. To demonstrate its capabilities, I will walk you through the process using two essential Photoshop tools: the Lasso tool and the Generative Fill bar.

To begin, I selected a simple picture from my collection, taken during a house-hunting trip in Oregon. The image contains foreground and background objects, as well as an interplay of light and shadow. Adobe Photoshop’s Generative Fill seamlessly blends generated images into the scene.

To enlarge the canvas, I used Photoshop’s Canvas Size menu item to create more white space around the original image. Throughout this article, red dashed lines represent the selections made with the Lasso tool, providing clarity in the absence of visible crawling ants selection interface.

By making a selection and using the Generative Fill button without a prompt, the AI filled out the scene. The AI added trees on both sides of the original image, paying attention to shadows. In the background, it included additional buildings and mountain areas.

The selection plays a crucial role in Photoshop’s Generative AI. The AI interprets the placement and size of the selection as indicators of where the generated element should go. It is essential to scale the selection appropriately for the desired object.

For the next step, I wanted to create a silver flying saucer with a sense of movement. Although I couldn’t achieve motion blur or other intangible effects, the AI successfully generated a silver UFO in the desired location.

Next, I focused on a country road in front of the house, where cars occasionally sped by. The AI accurately added a fence, plants, and a service distribution pole to the scene.

Throughout this process, Adobe Photoshop’s Generative Fill has proven to be a powerful tool for creating realistic and seamlessly integrated elements in images. Its ability to understand prompts and generate appropriate objects showcases the potential of AI in image creation.

In conclusion, Adobe Photoshop’s Generative Fill feature has revolutionized the image creation process by seamlessly blending AI-generated elements into existing scenes. With the right selection and prompts, users can create stunning and realistic images with ease.
