IBM Reveals How Generative AI Can Revolutionize Business Automation

IBM Research has proposed a software framework called “SNAP” that aims to automate human tasks using generative artificial intelligence (AI). SNAP trains a large language model (LLM) to predict the next action in a business process based on past events. These predictions can then be used as suggestions for businesses. The framework, described in a research paper titled “SNAP: Semantic Stories for Next Activity Prediction,” focuses on events in sequence and likely outcomes. It goes beyond traditional AI programs by using language models to capture more details of a business process and turn them into coherent narratives. SNAP involves three steps: creating a story template, building a full narrative, and training the LLM to predict the next event. The research team tested SNAP using various data sets and found that it outperforms older AI programs in next-action prediction. They also discovered that the structure and coherence of the generated stories significantly impact the performance of the framework. While larger language models like GPT-3 are more powerful, even smaller models like BERT yield solid results. SNAP proves useful in mining data about processes that traditional AI struggles to capture, particularly in cases with large categorical feature spaces. However, the framework’s advantages decrease when applied to data sets with limited semantic information.
